We need to join together for a just and humane immigrastsion reform and jobs program that will reach all Chicagoans.

RECAP: TAKING ON BIG INSURANCE AT THE AHIP CONVENTION IN CHICAGO!

500 people turned out on November 17th to challenge the insurance industry to get out of the way of health care reform. Lead by William McNary and Lynda DeLaforgue from Citizen Action/Illinois, Roberta Lynch (AFSCME31), Tom Balanoff (SEIU1), Henry Tamarin (UNITE HERE) and Ron Honse (CWA), 400 people marched, including a busload from Wisconsin, from the Blue Cross HQ to the Renaissance Hotel, where AHIP (the insurance lobbyists) was holding their National Convention. Marchers joined up with folks already picketing outside the hotel, the small business folks inside the AHIP, and the media. Finally, William McNary held a rally to make sure the insurance companies heard us loud and clear.

The Labor Committee on Immigrant Worker Rights, a project of Chicago Jobs with Justice, are hosting a formal launch meeting and breakfast for labor leaders in the Chicago metropolitan area, featuring Esther Lopez of UFCW discussing the latest in immigration reform legislation. The breakfast will be hosted by Ron Powell of UFCW and Tom Balanoff of SEIU at SEIU Local 1 offices at 111 E. Wacker in Chicago. Chicago Jobs with Justice is seeking an intern to learn the art and science of community organizing. Community organizing has been credited as the powerful weapon behind the successful Obama presidential campaign. You can learn these skills and apply them to whatever path you take in life.

You will learn how to have an effective organizing conversation, design a campaign, craft and promote effective messaging, implement campaigns and acquire deep knowledge of Chicago, Illinois and labor union history and politics. Experience in these areas preferred. You will make an essential and measurable contribution to our capacity to effect change in the lives of working families.

Web Design and E-Advocacy Internship

Internship: Web Design and E-Advocacy
Schedule: 15 hours per week

Chicago Jobs with Justice’s mission is to build a strong and progressive labor movement that works in collaboration with faith, community and student organizations to win fight for workers’ rights and social justice.
Chicago Jobs with Justice is seeking a motivated, creative individual to contribute his or her talents to improving our website and capacity to engage in e-advocacy. Experience in digital media and web design, as well as ability to edit and post content essential. Experience with or knowledge of labor issues, politics and organizing preferred.

Opportunity to learn community organizing and hone web-based skills in e-advocacy will benefit anyone seeking a career in non-profit, politics, marketing, web design and more. You will be making an essential and measurable contribution to our organization’s capacity to effect change to improve the lives of working families.
