Police on the scene Tuesday estimated 4,000 or more people participated in the march from Wacker and Michigan to a rally staged directly in front of the Sheraton Hotel at 301 E. North Water St with Richard Trumpka of the AFL-CIO; Anna Burger from Change to Win; Tom Balanoff, President of the Illinois State Council; Denise Dixon of Action Now; Armando Robles of UE and Republic Windows and Doors; and workers just like you and me struggling to pay their mortgages, student loans and keep their jobs.

Chicago Jobs with Justice offered a free breakfast at the Workers United union hall at 333 S. Ashland before piling onto buses parked in front of Teamster City. Working with the Chicago and Illinois Federations of Labor, we had 150 people on buses and hundreds more who went directly to the rally. Special thanks go to the Teamsters for making room for our buses on Jackson Street and the Bakers Union, Local 1 and Beth Zavala for gathering donated bagels, muffins and donuts from union shops for our breakfast. Also, I want to thank the students from all over the country who were visiting Chicago for the protest and who are a part of Jobs with Justice's Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) for helping to make signs on Monday.

During the breakfast, we heard from two women on the front lines of our economic crisis: Rosemary Williams, who is fighting foreclosure on her home in Minnesota and Tamera Guilinger, union carpenter here in Chicago who has been laid-off twice and is struggling to keep her home.

That is what this event was all about: fighting for an economic recovery for working people-Jobs, Housing and Health Care! The trillion dollar bank bail-out was supposed to keep us from entering another Great Depression. The big banks and their executives have taken the money for themselves and we are still seeing record home foreclosures and unemployment. The anger Tuesday was palpable-we know the truth! These bail-out bandits have stolen our money and are continuing to steal our jobs, our homes, our pensions and retirements savings and our dreams for a better future! We are fighting back-join us!
