Jobs to Move America Illinois
Jobs to Move America is a national campaign organized by the AFL-CIO and the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) to use public investments in public transit to create manufacturing of rail cars and buses in the United States, creating quality, union jobs. The campaign has realized this vision and goal in a breakthrough development in Chicago. After more than a year of talks with the Chicago Federation of Labor and LAANE, in October 2014, the City of Chicago and the CTA released a bid for rail cars that is based on LAANE’s U.S. Employment Plan language. The CTA has now awarded the contract to China Southern Railroad, which has committed to building a new plant to build cars for the CTA on Chicago's Southeast side. This will result in the creation of hundreds jobs in Chicago. The campaign and coalition is led locally by LAANE, the Chicago Federation of Labor, Chicago Jobs with Justice and community, environmental, and labor stakeholders. Chicago Jobs with Justice and the Jobs to Move America Illinois Coalition is also supporting workers organizing at the Nippon-Sharyo manufacturing plant in Rochelle, IL which is currently building cars for Metra in Illinois.
